Daily Loss Limit vs Maximum Loss: How Drawdown Rules Work

What the daily loss limit and maximum overall loss mean in a funded sports betting challenge, how they differ, and how to stay well inside both.

Every funded sports betting challenge has two loss rules. Breaking either one ends the attempt, so it is worth understanding exactly how they differ.

The daily loss limit

The daily loss limit caps how much you can lose in a single day. At BetFunder it is 10% of the account. On a $5,000 account, that is $500 in one day.

It exists to stop one bad session, often fuelled by chasing, from wiping out an account. Each new day gives you a fresh daily allowance, but losses still count toward the overall limit below.

The maximum overall loss

The maximum overall loss caps how far the account can fall in total during a phase. At BetFunder it is 15% on 1-Phase challenges and 20% on 2-Phase and 3-Phase challenges.

On a $5,000 2-Phase account, that is $1,000 in total. If the balance ever drops $1,000 below the starting point, the challenge ends, even if no single day broke the daily limit.

How they work together

Think of the daily limit as a speed limit and the overall limit as the edge of the road. You can stay under the speed limit every day and still drift off the road over a week of steady losses.

Example on a $10,000 1-Phase account: losing $400 a day for four days never breaks the $1,000 daily limit, but it adds up to $1,600, which is past the $1,500 overall limit.

How to stay inside both

  • Use small units. Around 1% of the account per pick keeps both limits far away.
  • Set your own daily stop at 3% to 4%. That is well inside the 10% rule.
  • Watch your weekly total. If you are down 8% over the week, slow down even if each day looked fine.
  • Treat same-game picks as one position. Correlated bets can all lose together.

The exact way each limit is measured is set out in our Rules & FAQ. Read it before your first pick, and contact us if anything is unclear.
